En aquest espai urbà, veritable cor de l'Eixample històric de Tortos, s'hi va concentrarla gent de forma espontània per dirigir-se tot seguit davant l'Ajuntament, llavors ubicat al nucli antic, per proclamar la II República. Just a la vora, hi ha el carrer dels Màrtirs de 1640, amb un nom be evocador posat també durant la II República per recodar les víctimes de la revolta popular de l'estiu de 1640, a l'inici de la Guerra dels Segadors.
